Signal Probe is exclusive to active BandLab Membership subscribers.

Signal Probe lets you monitor and analyze the audio signal at different points in a track or bus signal chain. It provides real-time visual feedback, making it easier to troubleshoot routing, inspect plugin processing, and verify signal levels throughout your project.

You can access Signal Probe from each plugin in a track or bus FX chain, as well as at the end of the signal chain for tracks and buses.

Signal Probe Features

Features

Signal Probe includes multiple analysis tools to help you visualize and monitor your audio signal.

Spectrum Analyzer

Displays the frequency spectrum of the incoming audio in real time, making it easy to identify the balance of low, mid, and high frequencies.

Use the Spectrum Analyzer to:

  • Inspect the frequency content of a signal.
  • Identify unwanted resonances or excessive frequencies.
  • Compare how EQs and other processing affect the signal.

Probe Modes

Signal Probe lets you inspect the signal at different stages of the processing chain.

Pre

Displays the incoming signal before it is processed by the selected plugin.

Use this mode to verify the original signal entering the plugin.

Pre/Post

Displays both the input and output signals simultaneously, allowing you to compare how the plugin affects the audio.

This mode is useful for evaluating changes made by EQs, compressors, saturators, and other processing effects.

Post

Displays the signal after it has been processed by the selected plugin.

Use this mode to verify the final output produced by the plugin.

Where to Access Signal Probe

Signal Probe can be opened from several locations throughout Cakewalk Sonar.

Plugin Insert

You can open Signal Probe from any plugin in a track or bus FX chain.

To locate Signal Probe for a plugin:

  1. Open the plugin window.
  2. Navigate to the Plugin Menu Bar.
  3. Click Signal Probe icon.

Opening Signal Probe from a plugin lets you monitor the audio signal at that specific stage of the processing chain, making it easy to compare the signal before and after individual effects.

Troubleshooting Audio

Signal Probe can help identify where audio issues occur within a signal chain. For example, you can:

  • Verify that audio reaches a plugin.
  • Compare the signal before and after processing.
  • Determine where audio stops in the signal chain.
  • Confirm that plugins are processing audio correctly.
  • Monitor signal levels to prevent clipping.
  • Check stereo phase relationships.
  • Analyze frequency content before and after processing.

By probing different locations in the signal chain, you can quickly isolate routing or processing issues without modifying your project.

Tips

  • Use Pre/Post mode to compare the effect of plugin processing.
  • Monitor the Spectrum Analyzer when adjusting EQ or tonal balance.
  • Use the Phase Scope to check stereo width and mono compatibility.
  • Keep an eye on the Level Meter to maintain proper gain staging.
  • Watch the CPU Load Meter when troubleshooting performance or evaluating processor-intensive plugins.
