Plugin Oversampling is exclusive to active BandLab Membership subscribers.

Plugin Oversampling enhances audio quality by running supported plugins at a higher internal sample rate, helping reduce aliasing and other unwanted artifacts. It is particularly beneficial for nonlinear effects such as distortion, saturation, compressors, and limiters.

Cakewalk Sonar supports oversampling ratios from 2x to 16x, including compatible plugins used within FX Chains and ProChannel FX Chains.

How to Configure and Enable Oversampling in a Plugin

Oversampling is configured individually for each plugin:

  1. Open the target plugin window.
  2. Click the plugin Settings button in the plugin menu bar.
  3. Go to Oversampling.

In the Oversampling menu, you can independently configure oversampling for real-time playback and offline rendering:

  • Enable for Playback: Applies oversampling during project playback.
  • Enable for Render: Applies oversampling when rendering, bouncing, or exporting audio.

Supported Ratios & Precision

Within the menu, you can choose your target Oversampling Ratio multiplier and Oversampling Precision level:

2x & 4x Oversampling

Ideal for real-time playback and tracking. Provides noticeable aliasing reduction with minimal CPU overhead.

8x & 16x Oversampling

Mastering-grade oversampling ratios designed for critical mixing, rendering, and export tasks.

Oversampling Precision Settings

Cakewalk Sonar lets you select the anti-aliasing filter precision algorithm. By default, Medium precision is selected, which delivers exceptional audio transparency while maintaining optimum CPU efficiency for most projects.

Global Playback Control (Px Button)

After configuring oversampling for a plugin, it is active during project playback only when the Px button in the Mix Module is enabled.

The Px button allows you to quickly toggle oversampling on or off globally across your project, making it easy to perform instant A/B comparisons between processed and unprocessed audio during playback.

You can quickly verify whether oversampling is active by hovering your mouse cursor over any plugin in the FX Rack.

The tooltip popup displays:

  • Whether oversampling is currently active
  • The configured oversampling multiplier ratio

Oversampling in FX Chains

Plugin oversampling is fully supported across all chain containers:

  • Standard Track & Bus FX Chains
  • ProChannel FX Chains

This ensures consistent anti-aliasing protection regardless of where plugins reside in your signal chain.

Phase Accuracy Improvements

Earlier versions of Cakewalk introduced a slight phase offset when plugin oversampling was enabled.

In Cakewalk Sonar, this engine behavior has been completely reworked. Plugin oversampling is now 100% phase accurate, eliminating processing delays and preserving exact sample alignment across parallel buses and tracks.

Performance Considerations

Because oversampling multiplies the internal sample rate, high ratios combined with high project sample rates (e.g., 96 kHz or 192 kHz) can significantly increase CPU utilization.

If you experience buffer dropouts or performance bottlenecks:

  • Lower the plugin oversampling ratio (e.g., set from 16x to 4x).
  • Select Medium precision instead of High precision.
  • Keep global oversampling disabled during tracking, enabling it only during mixing and offline rendering.

Note

Toggling oversampling state during active playback may cause brief CPU spikes as filters re-initialize.
