“There is not enough memory…”

Windows 7 users may see “There is not enough memory for this task” or similar messaging when connecting and attempting to use MIDI devices. While this is uncommon, this is normally linked to a limitation of MIDI ports. 

A simple solution would be to always connect your device in the same physical MIDI port you used previously. It’s good practice to always connect your devices prior to launching Cakewalk by BandLab, and following a similar setup each time you open the program will reduce inconsistencies in operation or functionality.

A more complex look into this issue would involve checking out the Device Manager in Windows, and looking specifically for any duplicates to uninstall. Similarly, you can look for hidden devices using this method:

1. Open Notepad
2. Enter the following: 

   
   set devmgr\_show\_nonpresent\_devices=1

   start Devmgmt.msc

3. Choose File > Save As
4. Change Files of Type to All Files, choose an easy to identify location like your desktop, then type hidden.BAT as your file name and click OK.
5. Right-click the file from your desktop and choose Run as Administrator. This should open the Device Manager
6. Go to View > Show Hidden, then locate the devices you’re no longer using and choose Uninstall
